Litotes Expressions in Wedding Ceremony of English And Selayarese: Stylistic Study. (Supervised by Hamzah A. Machmoed and Harlinah Sahib). This study aims to (1) explain the expressions of litotes in wedding ceremonies in English and Selayar. (2) explain the meaning of litotes in wedding ceremonies in English and Selayar. The purpose of using the descriptive method is to describe the meaning of litotes in each sentence in the wedding ceremony and to find litotes in wedding speech. Data were analyzed from a series of wedding events in Selayar Regency which were recorded using audio-visual media. The results of the analysis showed that there were sentences that were classified as litotes in the Appau-pau procession. These sentences reflect the speaker's humility and only appear in certain parts of the procession, thus indicating that litotes are used to create certain effects in speech. The results of the next study showed that there were 3 sentences in wedding speeches in English that were classified as litotes expressions and 12 sentences in Selayar that were classified as litotes expressions. Both were classified as litotes expressions in wedding speeches. By looking at the sentences and the context when the sentences were spoken, it can be concluded that the expressions of litotes in wedding speeches and appau-pau are actually a crystallization of a humble attitude shown through language activities. There is a difference in meaning between the phrases "understatement" and "humble" in the Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language. Low self-esteem tends to mean feeling inferior, not confident, pessimistic, feeling like you have committed a crime. Low self-esteem shows negative traits while humility shows positive traits. Expressions that show humility are supported by the reality behind the expression, while expressions that show a humble attitude are not supported by the reality behind the expression.
