Abstract (Abstrak)
Intrauterine growth restriction is a condition that occurs due to various causes and is an important cause of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Zinc is an essential mineral known to be important for many biological functions. Zinc deficiency during pregnancy has adverse effects on the fetal including problems with intrauterine growth restriction. This cross-sectional study to analyze relationship between umbilical cord blood serum zinc levels and intrauterine growth status of term babies. This study was conducted at the Khadijah Mother-Child Hospital and Fatimah Mother-Child Hospital, Makassar, Indonesia, from April 2023 to December 2023. In this study, 90 samples were placed into two categories: 54 samples with Small for Gestational Age (SGA) and 36 samples with Appropriate for Gestational Age (AGA). The results of the study findings demonstrated a significant difference in umbilical blood serum zinc levels with intrauterine growth status, p-value <0.001 (p <0.04). The median zinc level in the SGA group was 46.99 μg/dL with a range of 29.07-57.25 μg/dL and the median zinc level in the AGA group was 52.84 μg/dL with a range of 39.11-64.44 μg/dL. This study shows that term babies with SGA tend to have lower umbilical blood serum zinc levels than term babies with AGA. Both term babies with SGA and AGA tend to have umbilical blood serum zinc levels that are lower than normal values. Routine zinc supplementation at birth should be considered in neonates especially in SGA to reduce the untoward effects of zinc deficiency.
