Background: Virtual reality can reach households through consumer electronic devices such as smartphones. This will involve the emergence of these technologies in educational environments with different learning styles and facilitating the teaching and learning process. In the field of medical medicine, virtual reality simulation is said to be able to use traditional methods where students use mannequins resembling patients as learning tools. Dental education itself is a combination of theory and clinical practice, where students learn not only to know theory but to be proficient in clinical practice. However, along with the development of virtual reality, this technology can now be used in various fields of dentistry, one of which is Oral and Maxillofacial Differences. Purpose: Knowing the role of virtual reality technology as a learning tool in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Method: The design of this paper is a literature review. Conclusion: Currently the use of virtual reality technology in preclinical education is still very limited, there is no literature review or research that specifically discusses the use of virtual reality in preclinical education. So far, preclinical education only uses 360o video content procedures that are used with Head-Mounted Display (HMD) to display the content of surgical procedures such as tooth extraction. but in its use in clinical education it has been ensured that this technology is able to provide adequate effectiveness for dental students.
