Abstract (Abstrak)

Laying hens in the tropics are often faced with high ambient temperatures which cause heat stress and one way to overcome this problem is by providing natural shade. High environmental temperature causes stress so that it affects production performance. The way that can be done to determine the level of stress in livestock is by looking at the production performance and blood hematology profile. The purpose of this study is to determine and observe the production performance and blood hematology profile of laying hens. The experimental design that was used is a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) 2×3 Factorial with 5 replications. The observed parameters is production performance including egg production, egg mass, feed consumption and feed conversion while the observed hematological profiles were the values of erythrocytes, hematocrit, hemoglobin and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio. Research data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan's further test. The treatment that was given to chikens of different ages did not show any interaction and has no significant effect on production performance, hematocrit and hemoglobin levels but was significantly different (P<0.05) lower on the number of erythrocytes and higher on the heterophil/lymphocyte ratio in chickens exposed to the afternoon sun which can be used as an indicator of stress due to heat stress. Shading without regard to age had no effect on production performance (egg production, egg mass, feed consumption and feed conversion). Shading provides a more comfortable microclimate that supports a better haematological profile (erythrocytes and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio).
