Abstract (Abstrak)
DITHA AMALIA RAMADHANI "Praise as a Form of Phatic Communion: A Pragmatic Study" (supervised by Abdul Hakim and Simon Sitoto) The purpose of this study is to find out the extent to which Hasanuddin University Students use the functions of phatic communion proposed by Jumanto (2014) and reveal the reasons for using praise as a phatic communion tool. This research uses a qualitative design method. The data was obtained from 100 respondents who are active students of Hasanuddin University. The data was collected by giving the respondent several questions, each of which represented the functions of phatic communion created by Jumanto (2014). Giving questions is done through Google Form. The results of the form are then described by grouping respondents based on their class year so that it is easier to analyze. The results of this study show that the use of praise as a form of phatic communion is still very common for Hasanuddin University students. This is supported by the researcher's findings that all respondents have at least used one of the 12 phatic communion functions by Jumanto when giving praise to their interlocutors. In addition, 92 out of 100 respondents stated that the use of praise for communication is still relevant to this day. Some of the most common reasons given by respondents when giving compliments as a form of phatic communion is to please the interlocutor so that the conversation goes smoothly, create a comfortable atmosphere, and is used when the respondent runs out of topics of conversation.
