Abstract (Abstrak)

ABSTRACT SARIWULANDARI. Stylistic Analysis of Adjective, Nouns, and Verbs Collocating with "Woman" in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice: Exploring Gender Representation. (supervised by Hamzah Machmoed, and Sukmawaty) This research explores the interrelationship between linguistic structures and gender representation in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, employing Dixon's (2009) classification of adjectives alongside Delahunty and Garvey's (2010) noun categorization and Haspelmath and Sims's (2010) framework for gender analysis. The primary research question investigates how these grammatical classifications illuminate the portrayal of gender roles in the text, utilizing a corpus stylistic approach to analyze linguistic data derived from the novel. Key findings reveal significant patterns in the characterization and agency of male and female characters, suggesting that linguistic choices actively contribute to the reinforcement or subversion of traditional gender roles. This analysis underscores the importance of language in shaping societal perceptions of gender, particularly for healthcare professionals who recognize the role of communication in reflecting and influencing gender dynamics in clinical and societal contexts. The implications of this study extend to broader discourses on gender biases, highlighting the necessity for a nuanced understanding of language in human interactions and the pletential for linguistic awareness to inform practices that promote equity and inclusivity across various fields, including healthcare. By bridging literary analysis with contemporary discussions of gender representation, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how language functions as a vehicle for both reinforcing and challenging prevailing societal norms.
