Abstract (Abstrak)
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the fastest-growing global epidemics, and its major complication, Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), is a leading cause of blindness in adults. Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) is a more severe form of DR, which can lead to serious complications such as vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment. Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a primary surgical procedure used to manage PDR, but the effectiveness of this procedure in improving vision remains a subject of ongoing research.
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of pars plana vitrectomy in the management of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy, focusing on changes in patients' visual acuity before and after surgery at Hasanuddin University Hospital and JEC Orbita Main Clinic Makassar.
Methods: This study is a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from medical records of PDR patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy during the period of February-April 2024. Analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and non parametric Wilcoxon Signed Test to evaluate changes in visual acuity.
Results and Discussions: This study involved 30 patients, mostly aged 46-65 years, with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy who underwent pars plana vitrectomy at Hasanuddin University Hospital and JEC Orbita Main Clinic Makassar. The primary indication for pars plana vitrectomy at JEC Orbita Main Clinic was vitreous hemorrhage due to Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (100% of patients), while at Hasanuddin University Hospital, the indications were more varied, including vitreous hemorrhage (40%), TRD (40%), and a combination of TRD and vitreous hemorrhage (13.3%). After pars plana vitrectomy, 66.7% of eyes at JEC Orbita Main Clinic showed clear vitreous, while 46.7% of patients with TRD at Hasanuddin University Hospital showed retinal attachment after surgery. At JEC Orbita Main Clinic, there was a significant improvement in visual acuity after surgery, with the percentage of patients with visual acuity
results will be. This study supports the use of this procedure as the standard in the management of PDR. Keywords: Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy, Pars Plana Vitrectomy, Visual Acuity, Diabetes Mellitus.
