Abstract (Abstrak)

This study is motivated by the lack of research on the role of country music as a medium of U.S. cultural diplomacy in Indonesia and the potential of country music to be more relevant and accepted by Indonesian society towards American culture. The research aims to analyze the role of country music in supporting cultural diplomacy between the U.S. and Indonesia and to identify the challenges in maintaining country music in Indonesia. The research method used is qualitative, including literature review and interviews. This study employs the theory of cultural diplomacy with four indicators: information and art exchange, dialogue, commercial media, and soft diplomacy, as well as the theory of cultural globalization with four approaches: cultural diffusion, cultural identity, media reception, and cultural expression to analyze the role of country music in cultural diplomacy and the challenges faced in Indonesia. The results indicate that country music plays a role in uniting fan communities, introducing country music culture in Indonesia through concerts and festivals, and highlighting the role of the millennial generation, which has a significant influence in supporting cultural diplomacy of country music in Indonesia. Country music remains present in Indonesia through its fan communities but faces challenges such as lack of interest, limited media coverage, and language barriers. The conclusion of this research is that country music holds great potential as a medium of cultural diplomacy. However, to achieve this potential, continuous efforts are required from various parties, including the government, the music industry, and fan communities. By overcoming these challenges, cultural diplomacy between the United States and Indonesia through country music can be realized.
