Abstract (Abstrak)

Hysterectomy is the most common gynecological surgery performed on women of reproductive age. Hysterectomy is associated with impaired sexual function. Aim of this study was to determine the effect of total abdominal hysterectomy on female sexual function.
This was a prospective longitudinal study. This study was conducted at Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital and its network hospitals in Makassar city. Study sample was women who underwent total abdominal hysterectomy during study period. Woman, who was single, menopausal, had previous medical conditions and used hormone therapy or chemotherapy were excluded from this study. Subjects who met the criteria filled out FSFI questionnaire before and 3 months after hysterectomy. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon test by SPSS software. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Mean of total FSFI score after hysterectomy was found to be decreased after hysterectomy (27.23 ± 6.29 vs 25.33 ± 6.73) and this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.001). FSFI scores of interest, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and sexual satisfaction were found to be decreased after total abdominal hysterectomy. However, this difference was only significant for arousal (p = 0.026), lubrication (0.013), and sexual satisfaction (0.008). Meanwhile, the decrease in interest (p = 0.079) and satisfaction (p = 0.247) score was not found to be statistically significant. The FSFI score of pain during sexual intercourse was found to be increased after hysterectomy, although the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.056).
An assessment of sexual function, psychological support and provision of information regarding the efforts that can be made to overcome sexual dysfunction is required so that the patient can adapt to changes in her body after hysterectomy.
