Abstract (Abstrak)

Background: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a syndrome of endocrinological and metabolic disorders in women that causes menstrual cycle disorders, hirsutism, acne and obesity. Oxidative stress is believed to have an important role in the process of endometriosis, infertility factors, ovulation regulation and oocyte quality disorders in the human reproductive system. The source of oxidative stress that occurs comes from increased production of free radicals due to glucose auto-oxidation, decreased concentration of low molecular weight antioxidants in tissues, and disruption of enzymatic antioxidant defense activity.
Aim: Knowing the relationship between levels of oxidative stress on the incidence of insulin resistance in patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Methods: Observational study with cross sectional approach, a sample of 26 people with insulin resistance confirmed by IR HOMA > 2 and 26 people without insulin resistance confirmed by HOMA IR < 2, then all subjects were tested for Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) levels using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method from January to December 2019.
Result: Based on the value of Reactive Oxidative Stress (ROS) levels and Homeostasis Model Assessment Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), p value = 0.137 (p >0.05).
Conclusion: There were no significant differences between the oxidative stress against insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome patients.
Keywords: polycystic ovary syndrome, oxidative stress, insulin resistance
