Abstract (Abstrak)
HERAWATI SAID. The Role of Socio-Culture on the Incidence of Early Marriage: A Qualitative Study (supervised by Sri Ramadany and Mardiana Ahmad).
Background: Early marriage is marriage before the age of 18 for either boys or girls. The phenomenon of child marriage has become a global issue in various countries. Early marriage can be influenced by customs, beliefs and religion. Objective: This study aims to understand and find out the social factors and cultural factors that encourage early marriage. Methods: This research uses a qualitative field method with an ethnographic approach through in-depth interviews. The samples of this research are the main informants, key informants and supporting informants. The method used was purposive sampling on informants totaling 15 people. This research was analyzed with the N-Vivo application. Results: The study shows that social roles which include education, knowledge of parents and children, and the role of community leaders in understanding the factors of early marriage in health tend to be still low and the lack of socialization carried out by community leaders and cultural roles which include the role of parents, customs, age manipulation and beliefs in the West Suli District area still occur a lot. Thus, the phenomenon of early marriage still causes controversy that has not found a meeting point because it has a different point of view because the religious references that justify marriage do not mention the minimum age of marriage, so religious leaders and the community freely interpret these orders. At the same time, the prevalence of early marriage cannot be separated from the traditions and customs of the people who accept it. Conclusion: In this case, solving the problem of early marriage culture in the region has not been realized because seeing the many examples of early marriage that occur in the West Suli sub-district area and the existence of marriage dispensation, the community actually accepts it instead of considering it an unacceptable violation and requires sanctions.
