The aim of this study is to 1) find out the speaking achievement level of
the first-grade students at SMA Negeri 8 Makassar 2) find out the self-confidence
level of the first-grade students at SMA Negeri 8 Makassar and 3) investigate the
correlation between speaking achievement and self-confidence of the first-grade
students at SMA Negeri 8 Makassar.
The type of this study is a descriptive quantitave research. The total
sample of this study was 30 students in class of X. The writer conducted a
speaking test to measure the level of students’ speaking achievement and collected
the data using a questionnaire to measure the level of students’ self-confidence.
Beside that, the writer classified the categories of students’ speaking achievement
and students’ self-confidence in speaking. To analyze the data, the writer
correlated the results of the speaking achievement and the results of questionnaire
using the Pearson Product Moment.
The result of this study indicated that 33.3% of the students’ speaking
achievement were categorized at average level with the mean score 59.26, and
46.6% of the students self-confidence were categorized at average level with the
mean score 27.6, the result also revealed that the correlation between speaking
achievement and self-confidence of the first-grade students were moderately
correlated as the Correlation Coefficient (rxy) 0.456 is between 0.400 and 0.600
according to the interpretation table for the value of r. in other words, the
correlation between the two variables moderates that the first-grade students at
SMA Negeri 8 Makassar with high self-confidence will have high speaking
achievement score.
