Abstract (Abstrak)

RAEHANA. An Analvsis of Malondialdehyde in Children with Beta Thalassemia (supervised by Nadira Rasid Ridha and Ema Alasiry) Beta thalassemia is a genetic disorder inherited by autosomal recessive and spread throughout the world, including in Indonesia. Beta thalassemia requires lifelong transfusions which can cause accumulation of iron in the body. The increased iron causes oxidative stress in which one of the consequences is lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation can be measured by measuring the level of malondialdehyde which is a peroxidation product. This study aims to analyze the level of malondialdehyde in beta thalassemia by using cross sectional design conducted at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital from April to August 2022.Populations were patients diagnosed with beta thalassemia and non-thalassemia (controls) who met inclusion criteria. This study compared malondialdehyde level in beta thalassemia and non-thalassemia patients by involving 60 children aged 6 months to18 years. They were divided into 2 groups, namely 30 children in beta thalassemia group and 30 in non-thalassemia group. In this study, the level of malondialdehyde is higher in beta thalassemia children compared to the level of non-thalassaemic children with p value = 0.000. The level of malondialdehyde is significantly higher in beta major thalassemia children compared to beta bE thalassemia with p value = 0.000.
