Background:Tongueis an important organ in the oral cavity which is very complex. Based on the science of microbiology, the tongue becomes a primary place for the variety of bacteria. One of microorganism that can be found on the
tongue is Streptococcus mutans. Recently, antibiotic drugs have been produced, but the drugs which are usually consumed area modern drug that has a risk from the side effects. One natural resource that can be utilized as a natural antibacterial isSargassum sp. Sargassum sp. contains tannins, saponins, polifenols and flavonoids. The object of this research is to know the inhibition test toward the
extract of brown algae (Sargassum sp.) against bacteria in the tongueStreptococcus mutans.The Materials and the Methods of this research are described as follows: The samples were taken from the bacterium Streptococcus mutants from five students which focused on dentist major. The extraction of
Sargassum sp. used maceration with ethanol. The positive control group was given ampicillin, and the treatment groups were given the extracts of Sargassum sp. with 5%, 10% and 15% concentration incubated for 24 hours. Moreover, the
inhibition zone was measured by using calipers. The result: of this study indicate a significant difference with values p = 0.03 (nilai p < 0.05) where the inhibition zone is formed at a concentration of 5% that is 7,69 ± 0,72, concentration 10% that is 8,72 ± 1,11, concentration 15% that is 9,56 ± 1,34 and on positive control of ampicilin that is 18,71 ± 0,0.Conclusion:Based on the result of analysis it shows thatSargassum sp. is effective in inhibiting the Streptococcus mutants at the concentration of 15%.
