Abstract (Abstrak)

Background: Bleaching is a conservative and effective treatment for discolored teeth. The remaining free radicals from the bleaching agent remaining in the dentinal tubules can interfere with the polymerization of composite resins, thus reducing bond strength. Brown algae is a natural material that contains potentially phenolic compounds. as an antioxidant to eliminate free radicals. Objective : To evaluate the effect of the application of brown algae extract on the tensile bond strength of composite restorations in teeth that have been bleached. Methods: Laboratory experimental research with post test design with control group. The 24 occlusal surface premolars were cut to the dentin and then 40% hydrogen peroxide was applied for 24 hours. The teeth were then divided into 4 groups, namely group I (positive control), 6 teeth that were applied with 10% sodium ascorbate for 10 minutes, group II (test group) 6 teeth that were applied to 50% brown algae extract for 10 minutes, Group III (group test) 6 teeth were applied with 75% brown algae extract and group IV 6 teeth as negative control without any application. The occlusal surfaces of the teeth were restored with a 5 mm thick composite, then tensile bond strength tests were carried out using a Universal Testing Machine to test bond strength. Results: the highest average Tensile bond strength was in group I and the lowest was in group VI. Although the average tensile bond strength in group I was the highest, it was not significantly different from group III. Tensile bond strength groups II and III were significantly higher than group IV. Conclusion : Brown algae extract with concentrations of 50% and 75% was able to increase the tensile bond strength of composite restorations on teeth that had been bleached.
