Abstract (Abstrak)

MUKARRAMAH. Biophilia and Its Impact on Children’s Well-being Improvement in “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett (Supervised by Fathu Rahman and Amir Pattu)

This study aims at: (1) elaborating on the children’s biophilia reflected in the novel The Secret Garden; (2) analysing the biophilia impact on the children’s well-being improvement.
This research used the descriptive qualitative method and ecopsychological approach to analyze the novel. Fromm’s hypothesis was the theory used to find out the biophilia portrayal. Furthermore, using Nef’s (2008) concept, the children’s well-being acquisition was elaborated through applying of five ways to obtain the well-being namely: 1) connect; 2) be active; 3) take notice; 4) keep learning; and 5) give.
The research result indicates that the biophilia is identified from the portrayal of the enjoyment in contacting with nature, protecting nature through gardening activities, and caring for animals. Moreover, positive mood or feeling, improving appetite, and body change to become healthy and strong are the useful impacts acquired by the children after contacting with nature. In this research, the children’s well-being in “The Secret Garden” is derived from the nature through their connection with other people, activities in the garden, caring for their natural surroundings, learning process, and giving something to others.
Keywords : nature, biophilia, well-being improvement, children.
