Abstract (Abstrak)
AYU LESTARI. Psychological Dynamics and Resistance of Female Characters in Rajaa Al-Sanea’s Banat al-Riyadh: A Perspective of Jean Baker Miller’s Relational-Cultural Theory. )Supervised by Sitti Wahidah Masnani). Background: This study examines Rajaa Al-Sanea’s Banat al-Riyadh, a novel that portrays the lives of Saudi women under patriarchal culture, conservative social norms, and moral control. Previous studies have mostly focused on social criticism and feminism, while this research emphasizes the relationship between psychological experience, interpersonal relations, and women’s resistance. Objective: This study aims to describe and analyze the psychological dynamics experienced by the main female characters, namely Gamrah, Michelle, Sadeem, and Lamees, and to explain how disconnection and growth-fostering relationships shape their resistance. Research Method: This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical design. The primary data source is the novel Banat al-Riyadh, while secondary data are taken from books, journal articles, and previous studies related to feminist psychology, resistance theory, and literary analysis. The data are analyzed through identification, reduction, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. Results: The findings show that the female characters experience anxiety, inner conflict, social pressure, and identity struggle caused by unequal social relations and patriarchal pressure. Their resistance appears in symbolic, relational, and decisionbased forms. Conclusion: Women’s resistance in Banat al-Riyadh is not only a social response to patriarchy, but also a psychological response formed through relational experience.
