Abstract (Abstrak)

AZHARUDDIN MUNIRMAN. AZHARUDDIN MUNIRMAN. Performance Analysis of a Hydrogen Generator with a Copper Cathode and a Stainless Steel Anode (advised by Zuryati Djafar and Wahyu H. Piarah). Rising global energy demand and the need to reduce carbon emissions are driving the development of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source. Water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly method of hydrogen production, but its performance is greatly influenced by the type and concentration of the electrolyte and the magnitude of the electric current used. This study aims to analyze the effect of varying concentrations of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) electrolytes on electrical power consumption and hydrogen production in a water electrolysis-type hydrogen generator with a copper (Cu) cathode and a stainless steel anode, as well as to compare the performance of the two electrolytes. The study was conducted experimentally using varying catalyst concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%) at three different electric current levels (3 A, 5 A, and 7 A). The results showed that increasing the electrolyte concentration enhanced the solution’s conductivity, thereby reducing electrical power consumption; for the KOH electrolyte, power consumption decreased from 59.69 watts (5%) to 29.26 watts (30%), while for the NaOH electrolyte, it decreased from 72.36 watts to 40.65 watts at a current of 7 A. Hydrogen production increased with rising concentration, reaching an optimum within the 10–15% concentration range, with the highest production achieved using a 15% KOH electrolyte at a current of 7 A, amounting to 0.580 mol or the equivalent of 1.170 g of hydrogen. Overall, the KOH electrolyte consistently produced higher hydrogen yields with lower electrical power requirements compared to NaOH.
