Abstract (Abstrak)

AMELIA FEBRIANTI. 2026. WOMEN'S BODY CONTROL AND REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN MARGARET ATWOOD'S NOVEL THE HANDMAID'S TALE AND THE REAL WORLD. (Supervised by Herawaty Abbas) This research analyzes the representation of women's body control and reproductive rights in Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel, The Handmaid's Tale, and its relevance to contemporary socio-political realities. The primary focus of this study is to explore how the totalitarian regime of Gilead controls women's bodies through religious ideology and state power, and to compare these mechanisms with modern issues regarding reproductive rights. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a feminist literary criticism approach, specifically radical feminism, as well as Michel Foucault's theoretical framework of power and biopolitics. Primary data were collected through close reading of the novel, while secondary data were gathered from academic journals, and policy documents related to global reproductive rights. The results indicate that in The Handmaid's Tale, women's bodies are converted into biological instruments of the state through surveillance mechanisms (panopticism), regulation of mobility, and the erasure of autonomous identity. These practices of biopower are reflected in the real world through restrictive abortion policies and social norms that limit women's bodily autonomy. This research concludes that Atwood's dystopian narrative serves as both a critique and a warning against the strengthening of patriarchal systems and institutional controls that continue to threaten women's fundamental rights today.
