Abstract (Abstrak)
Rasyad Habiburrahman. Interpersonal Function in the 2025 Trump-Zelenskyy Oval Office Meeting: A Systemic Functional Grammar Analysis. (Supervised by Simon Sitoto and Ainun Fatimah). Background. Unscripted diplomatic negotiations remain underexplored compared to scripted political discourse. This study addresses how leaders spontaneously manage power asymmetry during high-stakes geopolitical crises. Aim. To analyze the interpersonal metafunction in the 2025 Trump-Zelenskyy Oval Office meeting using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), focusing on how mood, modality, and interpersonal grammatical metaphor (IGM) construct ideological stances. Methods. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, 30 representative clauses from the official White House transcript were systematically parsed for mood and modality variables, then logogenetically mapped onto Martin’s (1992) Protagonist and Antagonist ideological framework. Results. Findings reveal a "Declarative Paradox," with 90% of the dataset utilizing the declarative mood to naturalize coercive demands. President Trump exerts hegemonic control through extreme modal density. Defensively, President Zelenskyy adopts a Right Protagonist stance, using negative usuality and "cognitive traps" to block pressure. Concurrently, Vice President Vance weaponizes the interrogative mood as an "epistemic trap" for cross-examination. The negotiation ultimately collapses into a Left Antagonist shift, where the U.S. leadership abandons metaphorical shields for unmodalized, congruent grammar to enforce absolute compliance. Conclusion. In unscripted asymmetrical diplomacy, the interpersonal metafunction acts as an instrument of structural coercion, where the deliberate stripping of modality physically realizes the unmasking of superpower hegemony.
