Abstract (Abstrak)

Background. Code-mixing represents a key feature of bilingualism in social media platforms like TikTok. Natalie Awantara’s yapping videos on TikTok provide a relevant context for examining how Indonesian-English code-mixing functions in spontaneous digital speech. Aim. This research aims to identify and classify the types of code-mixing used by Natalie Awantara in her yapping videos on TikTok and to analyze the social functions of code-mixing in her speech. Method. This research employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were taken from twenty selected yapping videos posted on Natalie Awantara’s official TikTok account (@floerlilie) between September 2024 and March 2026. The data were analyzed using Charlotte Hoffmann (1991) framework of code-mixing types and social functions. Result. From the 227 data, all three types of code-mixing are identified, with intra-sentential code-mixing dominating at 196 occurrences. It is followed by intra-lexical with 22 occurrences, while involving a change of pronunciation appears least often, with 9 occurrences. In terms of social functions, all seven categories are present. Being emphatic about something is the most frequent function with 114 occurrences, followed by Talking about a particular topic (56), Clarifying the speech content (34), Quoting somebody else (12), Expressing group identity (5), Interjections (4), and Repetition used for clarification (2). Conclusion. The use of code-mixing on TikTok yapping videos shows that it serves multiple forms and functions that reflect communicative strategies, audience engagement, and bilingual digital culture in online communication.
