Abstract (Abstrak)

IMELDA. 2026. Gendered Language and Power Relatin in Twilight (2008) : A Critical Discourse Analysis Approach. (Supervised by Dr. Ayub Khan., M.Si). This research examines the use of gendered language and power relations in the film Twilight (2008) using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The aim of this study is to examine how the dialogue between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen reveals domination, resistance, and the negotiation of power through its linguistic features, as well as how this discourse reproduces gender ideology within broader social practices. The methodology employed is qualitative and focuses on the three dimensions of Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis: text analysis, discourse practices, and social practices. The research data consists of 20 excerpts from Bella and Edward’s conversations, selected on the basis of elements of domination, control, protection, resistance, and emotional dependence. The research findings indicate that rhetorical questions, imperative sentences, modality, negation and protective expressions demonstrate Edward’s dominance, which is reinforced by the emphasis on certain words and a low tone of voice. Nevertheless, Bella demonstrates resistance through direct refusal, negation and the assertion of personal boundaries. The control exercised by Edward often appears romantic because it is constructed as a form of protection and care at the level of discursive practice. This film not only reproduces patriarchal ideology but also opens up space for female autonomy. This study finds that the language used in the film has a significant influence on how audiences understand love, protection, control, and gender relations.
