Abstract (Abstrak)

RIZQY THALIA AFIFAH. Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Stages And Authoritarian Parenting In Seven Little Australians (supervised by Prof. Dr. Fathu Rahman, M.Hum.). Background. This study examines the psychosocial development of the Woolcot children in Ethel Turner’s Seven Little Australians (1894) using Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development. Aim. The study aims to identify the psychosocial stages reflected in the characters and to analyze how Captain Woolcot’s authoritarian parenting influences their psychological development. Method. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a psychological approach to literature. The primary data are derived from the novel Seven Little Australians, focusing on narrative descriptions, dialogues, and significant events involving the Woolcot children. Results. The analysis focuses on three psychosocial stages: Initiative versus Guilt, Industry versus Inferiority, and Identity versus Role Confusion. Baby and Bunty represent Initiative versus Guilt, where their attempts to take initiative often result in punishment and feelings of guilt. Nell reflects Industry versus Inferiority, showing responsibility and competence while still relying on external approval. Judy, Meg, and Pip illustrate Identity versus Role Confusion, each responding differently to paternal authority through rebellion, romantic imagination, and strategic conformity. Conclusion. The findings show that Captain Woolcot’s authoritarian parenting significantly influences the psychosocial development of the Woolcot children, shaping how they respond to developmental conflicts and producing varied psychological outcomes such as guilt, cautious obedience, resistance, and identity negotiation.
