Kritik Sosial dalam Jane Eyre: Pendekatan Marxis

ABSTRACT ANDI NURUL MAWADDAH MALIK. Social Criticism in Jane Eyre: A Marxist Approach (Supervised by Burhanuddin Arafah and Herawaty) This research aims to examine social critique in Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre by using Marxist theory developed by Karl Marx. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method in depth textual analysis to the novel, supported by sources on Marxist theory. The findings indicate that the novel explicitly depicts the rigid class hierarchy of Victorian English society, where the bourgeoisie control wealth and power while the proletariat, represented by Jane Eyre, experienced dependency, exploitation, and alienation. The dominant ideology of the era framing wealth, lineage, and appearance as indicators of human worth, served as a target of sharp social critique through the protagonist’s resistance. Marxist theory proved effectively in identifying critiques of class inequality, economic exploitation, and unjust social and religious conventions. Furthermore, the social criticism in the novel is relevant to modern societal challenges such as gender-based oppression, power imbalances in the workplace, and the importance of individual freedom. Jane Eyre is a literary work of enduring significance that reflects social realities and encourages readers to critique injustice. Kritik Sosial dalam Jane Eyre: Pendekatan Marxis (Dibimbing oleh Burhanuddin Arafah dan Herawaty) Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kritik sosial dalam novel Jane Eyre karya Charlotte Brontë menggunakan teori Marxis yang dikembangkan oleh Karl Marx. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan analisis teks mendalam terhadap novel, didukung oleh sumber-sumber teori Marxis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa novel ini secara eksplisit menggambarkan hierarki kelas dalam masyarakat Inggris Victoria, di mana borjuis menguasai kekayaan dan kekuasaan, sementara proletariat, yang diwakili oleh Jane Eyre, mengalami ketergantungan, eksploitasi, dan alienasi. Ideologi dominan era tersebut yang menganggap kekayaan, keturunan, dan penampilan sebagai indikator nilai manusia, menjadi sasaran kritik sosial yang tajam melalui perlawanan protagonis. Teori Marxist terbukti efektif dalam mengidentifikasi kritik terhadap ketidaksetaraan kelas, eksploitasi ekonomi, dan konvensi sosial serta agama yang tidak adil. Selain itu, kritik sosial dalam novel ini relevan dengan tantangan sosial modern seperti penindasan berbasis gender, ketidakseimbangan kekuasaan di tempat kerja, dan pentingnya kebebasan individu. Jane Eyre adalah karya sastra yang memiliki makna abadi yang mencerminkan realitas sosial dan mendorong pembaca untuk mengkritik ketidakadilan.
