Abstract (Abstrak)

ALKAUSAR. Critical Discourse Analysis of Bullying in William Golding's Lord of the Flies (supervised by Fathu Rahman and M. Amir P.). Bullying is a pervasive social problem with lasting impacts, and Lord of the Flies offers a compelling literary depiction of its dynamics. While the novel has been extensively analyzed, a focused examination of bullying through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Olweus' Bullying Circle offers new insights. This study aims to: (1) To identify how Olweus' Bullying Circle (1993) provides insight into the bullying dynami presented in Lord of the Flies. (2) To demonstrate how Fairclough's CDA uncovers the linguistic construction of Piggy's victimization in Lord of the Flies. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to analyze language and interactions in Lord of the Flies. The analysis was framed by Fairclough's three-dimensional CDA model and Olweus' Bullying Circle framework, examining textual features, discourse practices, and sociocultural contexts. The analysis reveals that specific linguistic strategies and social roles contribute to Piggy's systematic victimization, such as Jack that utilizes derogatory language and silencing tactics to assert dominance. The study identifies distinct roles within Olweus' Bullying Circle, illustrating how the group dynamic reinforces bullying behaviors. This research demonstrates how the combined frameworks of CDA and Olweus' Bullying Circle provide a nuanced understanding of bullying in Lord of the Flies. The study underscores the importance of addressing both linguistic practices and social roles in combating bullying, contributing to literary and social science discourses on the issue.
