Abstract (Abstrak)
NURAFIFA SULTHAN DAWE. The Analysis of Signs in English Tudor Architectures and the Palace Building of Datu Luwu Langkanae Palopo: The Perspectives of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes. (Supervised by Fathu Rahman dan Harlinah Sahib). This study aims to explain (1) the signifier and signified embedded in English Tudor architecture and the Datu Luwu Palace in Palopo based on Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory (1857–1913), (2) the denotative and connotative meanings contained in English Tudor architecture and the Datu Luwu Palace in Palopo based on Roland Barthes’ theory (1915–1980), and (3) the similarities and differences in signifier and signified (Saussure) as well as denotative and connotative signs (Barthes) on both architectures. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation, literature review A Historical & Descriptive Account of the Tudor, Elizabethan, & Jacobean Periods, 1500–1625 by J. Alfred Gotch, F.S.A for the English Tudor data, interviews with key informants for data related to the Datu Luwu Palace in Palopo, and documentation. The findings reveal notable differences and similarities in semiotic meanings between English Tudor architecture and the Datu Luwu Palace. English Tudor architecture exhibits characteristics that emphasize luxury, social prestige, and European Tudor aesthetic influences, whereas the signs conveyed by each structure of the Datu Luwu Palace are not merely symbolic for the elite but also reinforce the collective cultural identity of the Luwu community. Overall, the study demonstrates that architecture is not a neutral entity, but rather a visual language rich in meaning, derived from what is heard, seen, and touched.
