Abstract (Abstrak)

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) refers to a condition where pathogens or microbes grow and proliferate in the urinary tract in significant numbers. Generally, UTIs are categorized into lower and upper UTIs. Several studies have identified factors contributing to UTIs, such as age, gender, comorbidities, steroid use, catheterization, urinary retention habits, genital hygiene, and other predisposing factors. Objective: This study aims to describe the characteristics of UTI patients at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar, during the 2022 period. Methods: This was a descriptive epidemiological study. Data were collected from medical records of inpatients and outpatients diagnosed with UTIs at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar, during the 2022 period. Analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and presented in tabular form. Results: The study involved 534 participants. The sample distribution showed a higher proportion of females (58.8%) compared to males (41.2%), with the majority of respondents in the adult age group (56.9%). The most common education level was high school/equivalent (32%), while the least common were diploma education (3.0%) and no formal education (0.9%). Regarding UTI classification, symptomatic bacteriuria was the most prevalent category (40.4%), followed by lower UTI (25.1%), upper UTI (19.1%), and asymptomatic bacteriuria (15.4%). Most comorbidities were infections (63.9%), with pneumonia being the most dominant (62.7%), while non-infectious comorbidities were primarily diabetes mellitus (40%). Conclusion: Overall, the majority of respondents were adult females with a high school/equivalent education level. The most common UTI classification was symptomatic bacteriuria, while pneumonia and diabetes mellitus were the most prevalent infectious and non-infectious comorbidities, respectively. Keywords: urinary tract infection (UTI), age, gender, education level, comorbidities
