Abstract (Abstrak)

Background. Speaking is a crucial skill in English language learning, yet many students struggle to develop pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy. With the advancement of technology, Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT provide new opportunities to support language learning. Aim. This study aims to examine the impact of ChatGPT on students’ speaking skills at SMAN 1 Barru and to explore their perceptions of using it for speaking practice. Method. A mixed-method approach was employed. Quantitative data were collected through speaking pre-tests and post-tests, while qualitative data were obtained from questionnaires and interviews. The four-week intervention involved ChatGPT-based activities such as storytelling, role-playing, vocabulary building, and grammar practice. In addition, in the process of writing this research, artificial intelligence technology was used as a tool to assist brainstorming, grammar checking, and identifying and exploring relevant references to develop ideas and organize the content systematically. Results. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ speaking proficiency. The average score increased from 1.60 in the pre-test to 2.31 in the post-test, representing a 51% improvement. Students reported that ChatGPT enhanced their vocabulary, grammar understanding, fluency, and confidence. Their overall perception of ChatGPT was positive, noting its ease of use and helpful feedback. Conclusion. ChatGPT is effective in improving students’ speaking skills and holds strong potential for integration into English language learning in schools.
