Abstract (Abstrak)

FATHIMAH AZ ZAHRAH. A Contrastive Analysis of Person Deixis Used in English and Wana Language of Nothern Morowali (supervised by Hamzah A. Machmoed and Karmila Mokoginta) Wana is an under documented indigenous language spoken by the Wana people of Northern Morowali, Central Sulawesi, which encodes social meaning and cultural values through linguistic forms. Limited research on its deictic system highlights the need for further investigation, particularly in person deixis. This study aims to identify the types of person deixis in English and Wana and to analyze their similarities and differences. Employing Levinson’s (1983) deixis framework and a contrastive analysis approach, the data were obtained from English YouTube conversations and interviews with five native Wana speakers, then transcribed and analyzed qualitatively. The findings reveal that both languages share a universal person deixis structure centered on the speaker, using first-, second-, and third-person pronouns to identify participants in interaction. However, they differ in social function. English person deixis is grammatically consistent and socially neutral, whereas Wana person deixis is socially nuanced, particularly in second-person forms that encode respect, hierarchy, and familiarity. Moreover, English marks gender in third-person pronouns, while Wana relies on gender-neutral forms and contextual interpretation. These findings demonstrate that person deixis functions not only as a grammatical reference system but also as a reflection of sociocultural values and social relationships.
