Abstract (Abstrak)
Background. In literature, characters mimic actual human beings, which have psychological aspects that may or may not develop throughout the story. Aim. This study aims to find out the character development of the Pevensie’s children in Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe based on their psychological aspects. Methods. The research method used was qualitative and presented with descriptive analysis. Structuralism approach was used to get the findings from the novel. Then Freud’s psychoanalysis theory was applied to find out the psychological aspects that shape the personality of the Pevensie’s children and how those personalities developed throughout the story. Results. The study shows that at the beginning, three of the children namely Peter, Susan, and Lucy, started with a balanced personality. They showed restraints of id, fair ego, and strong superego. Whereas Edmund is the only one whose id is heavy sided, ego completely serving his id, and repressed superego. Along their journey in Narnia, each of the children faced challenges that fix their insecurities and deepen their understanding of the world. While Edmund shows the act of redemption and a complete change in personality. Conclusion. Characters of literary works are not just there to move a story, but to reflect how humans have the ability to change for the better, or worse.
