Abstract (Abstrak)

This research explores the relationship between student motivation and English speaking performance among tenth grade students at SMKN 4 Gowa, employing theory proposed by Deci and Ryan (1985) as the theoretical framework. The primary objectives of this research are to identify the types of motivation exhibited by students, examine the influence of these motivational factors on their English speaking performance, and understand how students perceive the connection between their motivation and speaking performance. This qualitative research involved several participants selected based on varying levels of English language proficiency. Data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with selected students. The findings reveal that students possess both intrinsic and extrinsic forms of motivation. Intrinsic motivation is reflected in students’ self-initiative, personal interest, and enjoyment in learning English. Meanwhile, extrinsic motivation stems from parental encouragement, future aspirations, and the influence of the school environment. Intrinsic motivation plays a pivotal role in fostering autonomous learning behaviors, while extrinsic motivation serves as a reinforcing factor that aligns with students’ long term goals. High levels of motivation both intrinsic and extrinsic positively contribute to students’ fluency and confidence in speaking English. Conversely, a lack of motivation tends to hinder speaking performance and increase anxiety during oral communication. These findings underscore the crucial role of motivation in shaping students’ language learning strategies and outcomes. Therefore, it is essential for English language instruction to incorporate approaches that actively support and enhance both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors to improve students’ speaking performance. Thus, future research could further explore how particular teaching methods or classroom dynamics influence students’ motivation, thereby contributing to a more effective and meaningful English learning experience.
