Abstract (Abstrak)

Background. Music, as a powerful form of expression, conveys meaning through lyrics. Olivia Rodrigo’s shifting themes in her album GUTS (Spilled) offer a valuable opportunity to analyze how language expresses emotion through Appraisal Theory by Martin and White. Aim. This study aims to analyze the application of Appraisal Theory in five additional tracks from GUTS (Spilled) and explain how the subtypes of Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation contribute to the thematic development in “obsessed,” “girl i’ve always been,” “scared of my guitar,” “stranger,” and “so american”. Method. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research method. The data, consisting of 30 selected lyrics, were obtained from Genius.com, a verified online music database. This study selected representative lyric segments to reflect the overall content, which were then analyzed using Appraisal Theory developed by Martin and White (2005) to identify the relevant subtypes and their contributions to each track’s theme. Result. From the 30 selected lyrics, the writer finds that the Attitude subtypes show 18 instances of Affect, 9 of Judgment, and 3 of Appreciation. Engagement subtypes include 19 heteroglossic and 11 monoglossic expressions. Graduation subtypes appear in 23 out of 30 data. Conclusion. The Appraisal resources found in the data significantly contribute to expressing the emotional tone and thematic shifts in the five tracks, reflecting Rodrigo’s portrayal of jealousy, self-assurance, vulnerability, healing, and love/admiration.
