Abstract (Abstrak)

Background: Music is an innate part of humanity found in various cultures. Jazz music is often portrayed in literature, such as in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and McKay’s Banjo. Comparing their unique depictions offers insight into jazz music’s complexity. Objective: This research aims to analyze the depiction of jazz music in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and McKay’s Banjo by using comparative literature approach. Method: The method applied is qualitative descriptive, using The Great Gatsby and Banjo as the primary data sources. Moreover, comparative literature is used to explore the differences and similarities on how both novels depicted jazz music. Discussion: This research finds that there are differences and similarities on how both novels portrayed jazz music. The Great Gatsby portrayed jazz music in the scene of medium- to high-class people in New York, United States, while Banjo in the scene of lower-class people in Marseilles, France. The differences further vary on the view and the variety of jazz music performance, and how the jazz musicians act in the novels. However, both novels showed that there is universality in jazz music, such as how it constantly enlivened a situation, how it attracted flapper, stunt, and alcoholic beverage, how the instrumentation works in jazz music, and how the novels portrayed the creativity in jazz music. Conclusion: This research concluded that jazz music had been flourishing in the 1920s where it was widely enjoyed by distinct social classes, and that jazz music thrives on its creativity and constant musical innovation.
