Budaya Amerika dan Korea yang Tercermin dalam Serial The Good Doctor (굿 닥터): Sebuah Studi Komunikasi Lintas Budaya = American and Korean Cultures as Reflected in The Good Doctor (굿 닥터) Series: A Cross-Cultural Communication Study

Background. In today's era, cross-cultural interactions have become increasingly common, yet communication across different cultural backgrounds often leads to misunderstanding. This research explores communication between characters in the American and Korean versions of The Good Doctor series, and interprets it using Edward T. Hall’s communication theory as the main framework. Aim. The research aims to examine the similarities and differences in character interactions between the two versions and analyze how these reflect the cultural values of the United States and South Korea, particularly in terms of communication style, time orientation, and spatial behavior as outlined by Hall. Method. A number of selected episodes containing cultural contrasts were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis. The data were collected through observation, transcripts, subtitles, and scene documentation, and then analyzed systematically using Hall’s concepts. Results. The findings reveal that the Korean version demonstrates high-context communication, emphasizing indirectness, formality, and group harmony, while the American version displays low-context communication, characterized by directness, informality, and individualism. Both versions also reflect a monochronic time orientation, highlighting structured schedules and punctuality. Furthermore, the research finds that personal space is treated more fluidly in Korean workplace culture, where after-work gatherings disintegrate the boundaries of professional and personal life, whereas in the American context, boundaries between work and private life are more rigidly maintained. Conclusion. This research concludes that while the narrative of the series remains consistent, cultural adaptation significantly reshapes how characters communicate, offering deeper insights into how media reflects and negotiates cultural identity.
