Andi Mufidah Humaerah. “Politeness Strategies Used by Lester Holt and President Biden in NBC News” (Supervised by Abdul Hakim Yassi and Sukmawaty) One on One with President Biden is a news segment hosted by Lester Holt, in which he interviews the President of the United States. This interaction intrigued the writer to conduct research aimed at analyzing the use of politeness strategies and the sociological factors that influence the speaker’s choice of strategy within the NBC News segment. The writer applied Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory of politeness strategies and sociological factors that occurred in the NBC News to analyzing the data. Then, the writer used descriptive qualitative research to describe the result of the study. According to the study, the writer finds 37 data of politeness strategies in the NBC News; 13 data of bald on record, 9 data of positive politeness, 12 data of negative politeness, 3 data of off record, and 0 data of say nothing/no FTA strategy. Furthermore, the study found that three sociological factors influenced the characters’ use of politeness strategies: social distance (D), relative power (P), and the absolute ranking of imposition (R).
