Abstract (Abstrak)
Mulhimah Syariah. 2025. Visualizing Language Learning: The Influence of Using Youtube Video (TED-Ed) in English Language Teaching for EFL Student (A Study Case at SMA Islam Terpadu Putri Wahdah Makassar) (supervised by Marleiny Radjuni and Sitti Sahraeny). Video-based learning such as using Youtube has great potential in English language learning for EFL students, especially in showing real contexts that are rarely found in conventional methods. However, the application of Youtube videos in the English language classroom has not been widely researched. This research aims to explain the effectiveness of using Youtube videos (TED-Ed) in EFL classrooms, to describe the effect of watching TED-Ed YouTube videos on students’ engagement and motivation, and to explain students’ perspectives on using YouTube videos as a learning medium and its relevance to real-life situations. This study used a mixed-method approach by involving two groups from the population of students in class XI of SMA Islam Terpadu Putri Wahdah Makassar. The sample of this research included 17 students from XI.4 as the experimental group and 17 students from XI.5 as the control group. The research instruments included video TED-Ed, pre-test and post-test, observation, and questionnaire. Data were collected based on the results of pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires as well as looking at students' responses to Youtube video viewing in class. The study shows a significant increase in students' post-test scores in the experimental group compared to the control group. Observations indicate students' enthusiasm during the video playback. Most students also show positive perceptions of the relevance, effectiveness and learning experience of using Youtube videos. However, the application of English in real-world contexts still shows a neutral response due to the lack of direct speaking practice. The use of TED-Ed Youtube videos is effective in improving EFL students' learning outcomes and motivation, especially in vocabulary and listening, although the effect on active communication skills still needs to be developed.
