Abstract (Abstrak)
Anggi Lestari. Types and Reasons of Indonesian-English Code Switching Used by The Hosts in Pancatera Podcast (Supervised by Ayub Khan dan Karmila Mokoginta) This study aims to find out the various types of code-switching used by hosts of Pancatera Podcast on YouTube, and determine the reasons for code-switching appear in the utterances of Pancatera’s hosts. The writer used mix method of qualitative and quantitative to analysed the data. Data collected from the YouTube transcript of Pancatera Podcast by doing observation and taking notes. The writer categorized the data based on the types of code-switching proposed by Poplack (1980) and Yassi (2006), and analyse the reasons according to theories by Hoffman and Saville-Troike. The findings of this research show that there are five types of code-switching found in the 133 data: intraclausal, intraphrasal, intralexical, interclausal, and tag switching. The most frequent is intraclausal which occurred 58 times, the second is interclausal with 39 times, next followed by iraphrasal which appeared 28 times, Intralexical found 7 times and the least used is tag switching which only occurred one time. The writer also discovered eight reasons for code-switching: talking about particular topic, repetition, lexical need, to soften or strengthen a command or request, showing empathy or solidarity, clarify the content of conversation, interjection, and quoting someone’s words. To conclude, the host of Pancatera used all five types of code-switching and dominantly used the type of intraclausal switching, and it found eight reasons for code-switching which mostly used is when they talk about particular topic.
