Abstract (Abstrak)

Background. This study discussed the use of swear words in the film The Hitman’s Bodyguard and its perception among English Literature students of UNHAS. The objectives. The aims of this study were (1) to classify and reveal swear words used in the sequels of Hitman and Bodyguard, and (2) to explore the perceptions of English Literature students about the use of swear words in the sequels of Hitman and Bodyguard. Method. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach with sociolinguistic analysis based on Andersson and Trudgill’s theory, and explored perceptions using a questionnaire instrument in the form of a Likert scale and an open questionnaire. The data collection technique in this study was divided into two phases, namely sampling from the film and distributing questionnaires. The analysis technique consisted of three stages, namely reducing, classifying, and drawing conclusions. The results. The study showed that there were 173 words in the film that contained swear words. The auxiliary type was the type most often spoken by story characters compared to the abusive, humorous, and auxiliary types. These types of swear words were also accompanied by psychological, social, and linguistic motives, with linguistics as the dominant motive. Based on the distribution of questionnaire data, the author could conclude that respondents considered the use of swear words in films was appropriate to suit the situation, which refers to swear words being considered as situational language. Conclusion. This study concluded that swear words could strengthen bonds between characters, provide humor, and emphasize dialogue. Swear words were also considered appropriate to the film genre without being exaggerated. Furthermore, swear words were seen as a language whose value was adjusted to the situation. Latar Belakang.
