Abstract (Abstrak)
This study examines the perception of non-English major students at Hasanuddin University regarding the use of TikTok as a medium for English vocabulary learning. Using a mixed method sequential explanatory research design that combines quantitative and qualitative approaches, data were collected through online questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The quantitative data from questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics through Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 25, while qualitative data were analyze using thematic analysis. The results of quantitative analysis show that 75% of respondents have positive perception toward TikTok as an English vocabulary learning tool. The research findings reveal that interactions on TikTok not only shape students' perception but also fundamentally change their perspectives on English language learning, transforming it from a boring subject into an interesting, flexible, exploration process that aligns with the digital era. This study also found that sociolinguistic variables such as academic background and gender influence students' perception and preferences in English vocabulary learning on TikTok. Students from majors with high English language requirements tend to have higher motivation compared to students from other majors. From a gender perspective, female students show more complex motivation and interest in emotional content, while male students tend to be more instrumental orientation and focus on practical content that can be immediately applied. This research aims to make a valuable contribution to the effective utilization of technology, particularly social media, to enhance English vocabulary acquisition.
