Abstract (Abstrak)
This study aims to analyze the main character in Anne Brontë's novel, Agnes Grey, in managing her emotions to deal with various conflicts that arise during her profession as a nanny. A series of events in the novel is categorized and analyzed using supporting facts from credible sources. This novel depicts the emotional challenges experienced by a young woman in dealing with social injustice and mistreatment from those around her. This study uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis and Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach, referring to Anna Freud's theory of self-defense mechanisms in examining the management of the main character's emotions against emotional stress. The results of the study show that the main character manages her emotions by using various self-defense mechanisms, namely reaction-formation, isolation, turning against the self, and sublimation. Reaction-formation and sublimation are two positive mechanisms that most dominate the main character in managing her emotional stress. The main character shows that she suppresses her negative feelings, such as anger or dissatisfaction, and replaces them with more socially acceptable attitudes. In addition, sublimation allows the main character to channel her inner conflict into a more constructive form. This emotional management allows the main character to maintain his integrity and survive in the face of pressure, and contributes to the achievement of inner peace and happiness in his life.
