Abstract (Abstrak)

Rahmat Hidayat, 2025, F041201111. Hate Speech In The Cambodians Against Americans In No Escape Movie: Sociolinguistics Study.(Supervised by Sukmawaty and Simon Sitoto) This research aims to investigates the various types and impacts of hate speech as depicted in the 2015 film No Escape, with a focus on the language used by Cambodian rebels and its role in escalating conflict and division between local populations and foreign expatriates. The study is grounded in the growing concern over the prevalence of hate speech in contemporary society, which often results in violence, social fragmentation, and economic instability. The objective of this study is to analyze the specific forms of hate speech portrayed in the film and examine how they contribute to societal division, economic decline, and psychological trauma. Utilizing a sociolinguistic framework and qualitative methods, this study analyzes key scenes in the film, focusing on verbal expressions and their broader implications for social behavior, economic activities, and emotional well-being. Data were collected through note-taking, selection, and display, then analyzed and synthesized into descriptive findings. The results reveal that the rebels’ rhetoric, including insults, defamation, blasphemy, false accusations, provocation, and incitement to violence dehumanizes foreign nationals and manipulates local populations into justifying aggressive actions. These forms of hate speech deepen social divides, deter foreign investment, and inflict significant psychological harm on both victims and perpetrators. In conclusion, the research underscores the powerful role of hate speech in fostering division, conflict, and economic decline, as illustrated in No Escape. It recommends further investigation into the long-term effects of media-driven hate speech, particularly within globalized and multicultural societies.
