Abstract (Abstrak)

Qinanty Ananda Hidayat. 2024. The Woman Struggle in Bronte’s Agnes Grey (Supervised by Burhanuddin Arafah and Abbas) This study aims to find some common problems faced by women, especially the main character (Agnes) of the novel Agnes Grey, who works as a nanny and comes from a lower middle-class family in northern England during the Victorian era. This research also aims to analyze how Agnes's attitude in facing and overcoming various problems that befall her. The method used in this research is qualitative method, using structuralism theory to analyze the intrinsic elements (Character, Theme, Setting, and Plot) of the novel and feminism theory of literature to find the problems faced by Agnes at that time. This study found that Agnes faced problems in several aspects, such as economic dependency, social isolation, and gender inequality. Several ways Agnes took to navigate or act in the face of these problems demonstrate her resilience, adaptability, and determination. Despite her isolation and mistreatment, Agnes maintains her dignity and strives to assert her identity.
