Abstract (Abstrak)
Background: The provision of anesthesia, especially general anesthesia in patients with smokers have a
considerable risk associated with the effectiveness of the airway such as excessive mucus production,
aspiration, hypoventilation, hypoxemia, bronchospasm, laryngeal spasm. Incidence of reintubation was
5.5% and 3.3% in smokers and nonsmokers. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the airway
after general anesthesia in patients smokers and nonsmokers.
Methods: This study is a quantitative analytical observational study approach "Cross Sectional", where
data on the independent variables and the dependent variable will be collected simultaneously (at the
same time) and then processed and analyzed. The number of respondents in this research is 146
respondents were obtained using concecutive sampling techniques, then the results were tested by ChiSquare with a significance level of α = 0.05
Results: The study found that smokers patient overview of general anesthesia in patients with post mostly
do not smoke (61.0%), most respondents passages effective in patients with post-general anesthesia
(76.7%). There are differences in the effectiveness of the airway after general anesthesia in patients with
smokers and non-smokers (p = 0.000) in which patients who do not smoke tend to have an effective
airway compared with those who smoked <1 pack and who smoke 1 pack per day.
Conclusion: There are differences in the effectiveness of the airway after general anesthesia in patients
with smokers and non-smokers where patients who do not smoke tend to have an effective airway
compared with those who smoked <1 pack and who smoke 1 pack every day.
Whereby it is expected that the patient will do surgery to stop smoking and for the anesthetic used as a
basis in determining the feasibility of operating a person to avoid unwanted risks.
