Abstract (Abstrak)
Nur Fitriani S. A Transitivity Analysis of News Headlines on the Israel-Iran Conflict in The Jakarta Post, The Jerusalem Post, and Al Jazeera English: A Systemic Functional Linguistic Study. (supervised by Abdul Hakim Yassi) Background. News headlines are strategic linguistic spaces where media outlets encode ideological stances during geopolitical crises, subtly shaping public perception. Aim. This study analyzes the ideational metafunction in online headlines using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on transitivity distributions and structural similarities or differences across media platforms. Methods. Using a qualitative descriptive method with quantitative frequencies, data were collected from forty-five headlines published by The Jakarta Post (TJP), The Jerusalem Post (JPost), and Al Jazeera English (AJE). Clauses were categorized by process types, participant roles (agency), and circumstances to unpack hidden institutional ideologies. Results. The findings reveal a major structural similarity: all platforms heavily rely on Material and Verbal processes while centralizing geopolitical power around the US and Donald Trump in high-agency roles with zero passive representation. However, distinct differences emerge in their local framing. TJP maintains an identical distribution between Material (39%) and Verbal (39%) processes with prominent Matter circumstances (27%), reflecting a neutral, non-aligned stance. Conversely, JPost predominantly deploys Material processes (54%) and Location circumstances (64%) to emphasize immediate territorial and spatial urgency. Meanwhile, AJE favors Verbal (42%) and Relational (21%) processes while placing Iran and Ayatollah Khamenei in the highest low-agency, affected roles with 9 instances to highlight systemic international impacts. Conclusion. These structural configurations directly demonstrate how headline grammar systematically represents geopolitical power balances and reinforces institutional ideologies.
