Abstract (Abstrak)

Riati Timbil. 2026. Contrastive Analysis of Morphological Process in English and Banggai Language. (Supervised by Husain Hasyim and Mulyani). Background. Affixation was a morphological process that played a crucial role in word formation and exhibited distinct characteristics in each language. Aims. This study aimed to identify and explain the similarities and differences in affixation processes between English and the Banggai language. Method. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using a contrastive analysis approach. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, recordings, and documentation involving five native speakers of the Banggai language in Tobungin Village, South Tinangkung Subdistrict, Banggai Islands Regency. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which included data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Results. The results of the study showed that both English and Banggai used prefixes and suffixes as bound morphemes in word formation. However, Banggai exhibited allomorphic variation influenced by the phonological environment of the base word, whereas English affixes generally did not undergo morphological changes. Furthermore, the Banggai language used infixes productively, particularly {-in-}, while English lacked a productive infixation system. Conclusion. These findings indicated that the Banggai language’s affixation system was more complex than that of English. This study contributed theoretically by enriching the field of contrastive morphology and, practically, by providing linguistic data that could be utilized in the documentation, archiving, and development of Banggai language studies by language institutions and regional language researchers.
