Abstract (Abstrak)
ABSTRACT Irmayani. Woman Subjectivity and Identity in Margaret Atwood’s Selected Novels (Supervised by Fathu Rahman, Amir Pattu, Herawaty Abbas). This research aimed to reveal how woman’s subjectivity and identity were represented in Margaret Atwood’s selected novels. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from four novels by Margaret Atwood, namely The Edible Woman (1969), The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), The Blind Assassin (2000), and The Testaments (2019). The data were analyzed qualitatively using the approaches of genetic structuralism and feminism, particularly gynocritics. The research result indicated that by considering several factors such as Atwood’s background as a Canadian writer who emphasizes themes of victimization and survival in Canadian literature, as well as her position as a realist writer, Margaret Atwood constructs woman’s subjectivity and identity in her novels based on woman personalities in her concrete social realities. From the perspective of feminist thought on woman’s subjectivity and identity, it can be concluded that Atwood’s novels portray the woman’s characters through various feminist paradigms, particularly those associated with second wave and third wave feminism. In the context of second wave feminism, Atwood emphasized woman’s effort to discover the “true” identity and subjectivity. Meanwhile, from the third wave feminist perspective, she depicted the woman’s subjectivity and identity in terms of social discourse formation.
