Abstract (Abstrak)

ZALZA PUTRI NABILA. The Influence of TikTok as A Medium for Incidental English Vocabulary Acquisition by Non-English Major Students: A Study at Indonesian Literature Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University (Supervised by Nasmillah and Mulyani) This study investigated the influence of TikTok usage on incidental English vocabulary acquisition among non-English major students. The research was motivated by the limited formal English instruction received by Indonesian Literature students, contrasted with their high exposure to English content on TikTok. A quantitative correlational design was employed, involving 114 undergraduate students from the Indonesian Literature Study Program at Hasanuddin University, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire measuring TikTok usage patterns and perceived incidental vocabulary acquisition, along with a 16-item multiple-choice vocabulary test assessing receptive vocabulary knowledge. Descriptive statistics and Spearman Rank Correlation were used for data analysis due to the non-normal distribution of the data. The findings revealed that students exhibited a high level of TikTok usage (mean score = 19.29 out of 25) and demonstrated good incidental vocabulary acquisition (mean score = 73%). The Spearman correlation coefficient indicated a statistically significant positive relationship (ρ = 0.594, p = 0.000) between TikTok usage and incidental English vocabulary acquisition. These results suggest that TikTok serves as an effective informal medium for supporting incidental vocabulary development outside the traditional classroom setting.
