Abstract (Abstrak)
ABSTRACT WILDAN DINUS SALAM. Conversational Implicature in Charli XCX’s Brat Album: A Pragmatic Analysis (Supervised by Dr. Simon Sitoto, M.A. and Drs. Husain Hasyim, M. Hum.). Background. Song lyrics often contain implied meanings that contribute to identity construction. In Brat album, Charli XCX uses conversational implicatures to construct the “brat” persona. Aim. This study aims to identify the conversational implicatures found in Brat album and explain how they contribute to the construction of the “brat” persona. Method. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of lyric excerpts from six songs in Brat album. The analysis was based on Grice’s (1975) Conversational Implicature and Cooperative Principle theories, focusing on the flouting of the maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. Results. The findings show that the “brat” persona is constructed through systematic flouting of Gricean maxims, generating implicatures that represent cultural dominance, narcissism, rebellious femininity, emotional vulnerability, social anxiety, and resistance to social norms. Conclusion. The study concludes that the “brat” persona is a dynamic identity discursively constructed through conversational implicatures and emotional contradictions within contemporary popular culture.
