Abstract (Abstrak)
Abstrac Mastitis is an inflammatory disease of the mammary gland and remains one of the major constraints in dairy farming because it drastically reduces both milk production and milk quality. This final case report aimed to evaluate the diagnosis and management of mastitis in a Friesian Holstein (FH) dairy cow at the Center for Superior Livestock Breeding and Forage Production (BBPTU-HPT) Baturraden in order to apply appropriate field diagnostic procedures and therapeutic management. A comprehensive examination was conducted on an actively lactating female FH cow with eartag number 22067. The diagnostic methods included anamnesis, physical examination of the udder through inspection and palpation, macroscopic evaluation of the first milk stream, and confirmatory testing of fresh milk samples using the California Mastitis Test (CMT) reagent. Physical examination revealed severe localized acute inflammatory signs in the left forequarter (sinistra anterior), including swelling, redness, increased local temperature, and marked pain response during palpation and milking. Macroscopic evaluation of the first milk stream showed a broken and highly viscous consistency with the presence of fine cheese-like clots. Confirmatory testing using the CMT produced a strongly positive result characterized by the formation of a gel-like matrix (crude) adhering to the paddle. Causal treatment consisted of hygienic evacuation of the infected quarter, administration of a systemic combination antibiotic containing Procaine Penicillin and Dihydrostreptomycin at a dosage of 1 mL/10–15 kg body weight intramuscularly, local intramammary therapy with Oxytetracycline hydrochloride (one syringe after milking), and anti-inflammatory therapy with Meloxicam at a dosage of 0.5 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly. The case concluded that the clinical mastitis observed in this fourth-parity cow was multifactorial in origin, involving host immune status, mechanical trauma to the teat sphincter associated with high milk production capacity, and inadequate hygiene practices within the milking chain.
