Abstract (Abstrak)

Diarrhea in calves is a major health issue in the dairy industry, causing significant economic losses due to high morbidity and mortality rates. This case report aims to identify the causative agents of diarrhea in Friesian Holstein calves at BBPTUHPT Baturraden through fecal examination to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Observations were conducted on six fecal samples from various age groups between December 8, 2025, and January 2, 2026. The methods employed included clinical physical examinations and laboratory testing using the direct smear method with physiological saline (NaCl). Microscopic results revealed variations in causative agents based on age group: *Toxocara vitulorum* (eartag 9689) and *Eimeria bovis* (eartag 9707) infections were identified in calves aged <1 month. In the 2–3 month age group (eartags J9620 and J9630), parasitological examination results were negative, suggesting the diarrhea stemmed from non-parasitic factors. Meanwhile, in calves aged >3 months (eartags J9438 and J9483), the opportunistic protozoan *Blastocystis* sp. was detected. Clinically, the calves exhibited a relatively stable general condition and good milk intake, despite having liquid to semi-liquid feces. Treatment was administered based on the specific cause—using anthelmintics and anticoccidials—alongside supportive therapy involving oral electrolyte fluids. This report concludes that the occurrence of diarrhea in calves is multifactorial, influenced by age, infectious agents, feeding management, and environmental sanitation.
